Brentwood Wins State Rugby Championship

The Brentwood High School boys became the 2006 State Rugby Champions when they bested Maryville H.S. by a score of 52-7 in the championship match of the Tennessee High School Rugby State Championships, played in Brentwood Tennessee.

Brentwood reached the championship round by beating Brighton High School 43-0 in the semi-finals, while Maryville moved into the finals by defeating The Fighting Irish of Nashville 44-0. Both Brentwood and Maryville boast strong rugby programs that have yielded many past successes.

Maryville scored first by unleashing a Dutch Vancuren breakthrough run to the Try Line (5 pts.) and following it with a conversion by Davis Payne (2 pts.). The game then took a decided Brentwood turn as the ever dominate Brumbies rattled off 52 unanswered points. Highlights of the Brentwood scoring spree included three Trys by Stephen Reese, and an MVP performance by Benji Goff. Chad Evans also went 6 of 8 on conversion kicks.

Scoring for Brentwood was led by Stephen Reese with three Trys (15 pts.), Chad Edmonds with six conversion kicks (12 pts.), and with one Try each were Tommy Derryberry, Joel Fugate, Benji Goff, Michael Schober, and Jerod Wilson. (5 pts. each).

Brentwood's next appearance will be at the USA Rugby High School National Championship Tournament at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire beginning May 20th.
