STARTING & ORGANIZING
A HIGH SCHOOL RUGBY PROGRAM
Starting a Team | Joining the League | The Bryant Model

The Tennessee High School Rugby League and its members were organized following the Bryant Model. The model is a 21 page report entitled "How to Start a High School Rugby Program That Will Survive Your Leadership Term," written by Phillip C. Bryant one of the original organizers of high school rugby in Indiana. The Indiana program has been successful since 1990. Phil Bryant can attest to the success of high school rugby as an administrator, coach and parent. Any adult (21 and over) that is interested in starting a team should read this document first and foremost as it is an outstanding overview. To obtain a copy send your name and address to the league commissioner or visit this link.

By far the most important ingredient for a successful high school rugby program is a positive attitude and the ability to overcome minor obstacles. As with anything there will be negative people and each team will face different hurdles, but as long as you are reasonably determined you will succeed. It is just like the field of dreams - "If you build it they will come." Once student athletes play the game - Rugby will sell itself. There is a definite need for an organized contact sport.

USA RUGBY
USA Rugby is the governing body over all organized rugby in the USA and has a wealth of information on rugby. USA Rugby supports high school and youth rugby through YOUTH DEVELOPMENT OFFICERS (YDO). Start-up teams may receive a support package and other information that is helpful in starting a club. The YDO for this area is Harry Laws. All teams in the league must comply with the USA Rugby Club and Individual Participation Program (CIPP). To obtain a CIPP package simply go to USA Rugby's web site.
